Religious Education

1) Identify what it means to be a disciple of Jesus including entering into a lifelong relationship with him, living according to his values and worshipping Te Atua.
2) Explain what is meant by the term Community of Disciples.
3) Explain how the Church is to be a Community of Disciples that makes Christ visible in the world today.

The Church is One and Holy
We believe in ONE, HOLY, CATHOLIC and APOSTOLIC Church.

Ephesians 4: 4 - 6
4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all
and through all and in all.

Same
Different
  • Believe in one God
  • All disciples of Jesus
  • Te Wairua Tapu unites Christians with God
  • Share one Baptism
  • Continue the mission of Christ in the world in their worship and work.
  • Different denominations
  • Different names
  • Worship in different ways
  • Do not celebrate all the Sacraments

John 17: 20 - 23
20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one,23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.

How many times did Jesus pray that they all be one?
In this reference he prayed to be one three times;
"I do not for these only, but also for those who will believe in me though their word, that they may all be one."
"The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one."

I interpret that this is in the Garden of Gethsemane and even though he was praying with his disciples I think that Jesus was talking about all people being one and not just referring to the disciples.

Each of us are called to work towards this unity.

The Church is ONE and HOLY
We are Holy because:
Te Wairua Tapu dwells in each person.
We are not perfectly Holy because:
People are still on their pilgrim journey and their not perfectly Holy.

The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God,
the Father Almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
He descended into hell;
on the third day He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from there He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Holy Catholic Church,
the communion of Saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.

Amen.
